We asked Alex Frantchuk from Imperial Cabinets & Woodwork about cabinet trends for 2021 and what you should expect when working with a cabinet designer on your custom home build.
Here’s Why You Should Consider Custom Cabinets in your home:
- They Look Great: There is no mistaking the look and feel of custom-made cabinets. They simply look more “finished” than stock cabinets. On top of that, you have the ability to create something that meets your specific sense of style.
- They Fit Your Needs: Not only do custom cabinets look great, but they can also be designed to function specifically to meet your needs. If you’re a wine aficionado, you can have a wine rack built in. If you’re a gourmet cook, you can have a convenient spice rack built into the cabinetry. If you want your cupboards deeper, higher, or wider than traditional cabinets, you can do that. That’s the beauty of custom-made cabinetry.
- You Get Great Quality: Your cabinets will be made from better materials than standard cabinets. Both the cabinets themselves and the hardware will be of a higher quality and doors and drawers should operate better. On top of that, your cabinets should last longer.

Cabinet doors are the most visible design elements in your kitchen, so your door style is one of the most important decisions you will make. A great way to narrow down your choices of cabinet doors is to decide on a door profile.
According to Alex Frantchuk, transitional cabinets are still very much on trend.
“I know transitional has been the trend for a little while, and it still is very much so. White Oak and Paint Grade is very in right now, as are simple, cleaner lines with a timeless style. Nothing over the top, but at the same time very functional.”
Another trend in custom cabinetry happens behind the doors: Pull-outs and special function cabinets remain on top of mind for luxury homes.
” It’s a simple thing, but people love those kind of accessories such as rollouts. In fact, I believe they like pull-outs more than drawers because when you open the rollout, you can have a little more flexibility and a little more room to play with.” says Frantchuk.
Cabinet Trend: Fancy Drawers
Another trend in cabinetry is drawers that do everything from cool and heat your foods to wash your dishes.
Dishwasher Drawers
Dishwasher drawers offer a sophisticated and convenient alternative to a traditional dishwasher. Once installed into your kitchen cabinetry, they slide out smoothly to let you load and unpack dishes easily. Digging a bit deeper into the energy savings and green aspect of miniature dishwashers, these appliances require significantly less water to run than full-sized dishwashers, and even less than handwashing dishes.
Refrigerator drawers are fridge and freezer models that fit underneath countertops in place of cabinets. These compact units fit in the space of a traditional cabinet and slide outwards just like a regular cabinet drawer door.
Refrigerator Drawers
Placing the fridge down below where cabinets traditionally belong allows placement in non-traditional spots, such as underneath a kitchen island. Under counter units also frees up valuable square footage in tight quarters kitchens. Most refrigerator drawers are also cabinet depth, which means these refrigerators will line up nicely with standard cabinetry instead of sticking out like most standalone units, providing both aesthetic and space-saving benefits.
Other Things to Consider:
When choosing custom cabinets for your bathroom, consider adding a pull out space for styling. Equipped with a place to hold hot hair stylers, these drawers can also contain an electrical plug, reducing the countertop clutter.
